Can the operation execute on the platform it already has?

Operational Excellence is the second foundation. It asks whether the business is internally ready before it is externally funded: whether the processes, data and discipline exist to make a platform investment pay, or whether the platform will simply expose their absence at greater scale and speed. The failure cluster is Operational Immaturity. Most digital commerce shortfalls are readiness gaps of exactly this kind.

The six checks

  1. Does operational discipline precede platform investment?
  2. Do the core retail processes execute?
  3. Is there a single view of inventory across channels?
  4. Are data standards built for distance selling?
  5. Are marketing and the site experience aligned?
  6. Is site speed treated as commercial, not technical?

The three readiness ratings

Foundation Ready

Strong foundations. External investment in platforms, acquisition and channel expansion is likely to generate returns, and the focus shifts to optimisation and scale.

At Risk

Meaningful gaps in one or more foundations. Continued investment generates diminishing returns until they are addressed, so a prioritised fix programme comes before scaling.

Foundations First

Critical gaps across multiple foundations, with external spend destroying value. Stop, rebuild the base, then grow.
